And under those conditions, the faults of a lens are more apparent with a higher resolution sensor. I still use my 17-35mm f/2.8 named ”Mr. Squeaky“ on a D800. I prefer that range to that of the Sigma 14-24mm I also own. At f/2.8 and f/4, In 100% crops the design shows its age where edge sharpness matters.
Intro. The AF-S Nikkor 16-35mm f/4.0G ED VR is the gold-ringed sister to Nikon’s 18-35mm f/3.5-4.5G ED. It’s an ultra-wide angle zoom lens that’s compatible with Nikon’s full-frame FX format DSLRs and was announced in 2010. It also works on cropped-frame DX format models, where it becomes equivalent to a 24-53mm zoom.

The Nikon Nikkor 35mm f/2.8 is probably the least expensive lens in Nikon's line, along with the slowest 50mm, at any given point in time. It's an FX lens which works great on FX and DX digital cameras and of course on 35mm. I got this one for $25 in 2007, used, and it works fantastically well on my Nikon D3.
It's also a nice alternative to the Nikon 17-35mm f/2.8 AF-S which unfortunately suffers from a faulty AF-S motor prone to failure. I actually think the Tokina 20-35mm has better corners than the Nikon 20mm f/1.8 G, though the Nikon 20mm is much sharper and cost more.
Designed as a DX workhorse, the Nikon AF-S DX Zoom-NIKKOR 17-55mm f/2.8G IF-ED is a 25.5-82.5mm-equivalent zoom characterized by its bright maximum aperture and sophisticated optical design. The fast f/2.8 constant maximum aperture benefits working in difficult lighting conditions and also enables greater control over depth of field when

This Tokina 16-28mm f/2.8 is as good optically as Nikon's world-changing 14-24mm f/2.8 of 2007, and this Tokina lens costs less than half as much. This Tokina is also as good optically as Canon's 16-35mm f/2.8 L II. This Tokina's optical performance is exceeded only by Nikon's 16-35mm f/4 VR, which I prefer to either of the Nikon 14-24mm or
Bear in mind that while the17-35/2.8 isn't as large or heavy as the 24-70/2.8, it's still a handful. If you don't need f2.8, I think the 24-85/3.5-4.5 AF-S VR is a good compromise between image quality and size and bulk. My favorite moderate Nikon zoom remains my 24-120/4 VR, especially on a D750 body with it's excellent high ISO performance.
In 1999, Nikon announced the first zoom lenses with silent-wave AF-S drive. Unsurprisingly they introduced the then new technology into their high-end products first. One of these lenses is the Nikkor AF-S 28-70mm f/2.8 IF-ED, a fast standard zoom for full-frame cameras. It features the gold ring, indicating a professional grade Nikon lens.
Compared to its predecessor, the Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8E VR grew from 83 x 133mm to 88 x 155mm in barrel size and gained a total of 170 grams. The lens filter thread also grew from 77mm to 82mm. All of the above, combined with a high-quality build and full weather sealing came at a pretty large price increase – Nikon set the MSRP of the lens
